My 3 year old thought they were so good, she traded a piece of cake for a glass of Glow Mama.

Now that’s an endorsement - we beat cake!  Thanks for the mention Angele!

Rose from The Lemonade Stand tried Glow Mama this week.

If I’d known about Glow Mama back then I would have been stoked! Light and fruity without being too sweet like juice and specially formulated for pregnant women or nursing moms - it would have been the perfect drink for me!

Rose also likes the sample packs, light taste and low calories.  Rose’s top suggestion?  Bigger bottles!  We’ll keep that in mind!

and Autum loves that Glow is

a great complement to your prenatal vitamins. It’s also a great drink for the mom on the go with a crisp and refreshing taste.

The pre- in prenatal vitamins

March 20th, 2009 by amy

Planning is key, especially when you are deciding to start a family or try for another child.  So while you look at budgets and birthdates, make sure you are taking care of yourself, and preparing your body for the journey. Recent research provides evidence that you should ideally start taking prenatal vitamins three months prior to conception to reap the benefits those horse pills provide.

What Are the Benefits?

Most traditional adult multivitamins (even those formulated for women) don’t contain enough of the key ingredients for women trying to conceive - namely - folic acid, calcium, and iron.

Folic Acid -  daily dose of 400 micrograms (mcg) ir recommended starting at least a month before you begin trying to get pregnant and at least 600 mcg a day once you know you’re pregnant.

Calcium - The amount of calcium you need during pregnancy is about 1,000 mg per day — the same amount you need when you’re not pregnant.  Your baby needs some of the calcium from your bones, so you need to make sure its being replaced to prevent osteoporosis.

Iron - Avoid iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy, you should consume 27 milligrams (mg) of iron per day, 50 percent more than you need when you’re not pregnant.  Your body is making a lot more blood to support both of you!

Why So Early?

Prenatal vitamins help prevent neural tube defects and the neural tube (which develop into the brain & spinal cord) develops very early on in pregnancy - in the first month - before you may even know you are pregnant!  You should then continue to take them throughout your pregnancy and in most cases, while breastfeeding as well.

Most prenatal vitamins are available OTC, though you should check with your doctor in case he or she has specific brand recommendations for you.  And  don’t forget that Glow Mama provides many of the key prenatal vitamin sources (and that all important fiber!) in an easy-to-swallow form endorsed by the APA!  Read more of the APA’s recommendations for pre-conception.

Hear Lucy and Amy’s Chatterbox BlogTalkRadio interview this week, and read Christie’s review.  Christie was generous enough to even share some with a pregnant friend of hers who thought

“It’s really good and doesn’t leave you thirsty like most fruit drinks. I stayed hydrated and is a great alternative to water when you want a little flavor.”

And Samantha of As They Grow Up had a chance to sample some Glow Mama this week.

For me, drinking water, which I normally love, became a chore as I really wanted something with a little bit of flavor. Glow Mama, a low calorie drink made with kiwi, is a great alternative to sugary juices.

Did we mention she’s also giving some away?

Wear Red Day!

February 6th, 2009 by amy

It’s not just the kids that get to have school dress-up days anymore! Today is Wear Red Day, which supports the Go Red For Women movement to help the fight against heart disease.  Heart Disease is the #1 killer of women, so its near and dear to our hearts - literally!

I bought this Charity Buxom lip gloss from Bare Escentuals yesterday - the cherry color is fun and perfect for everyday wear!

Wearing red already and looking for more ways to support the cause?

  • Donate to the American Heart Association and support research
  • Shop the Go Red for Women boutique
  • Read up on the risk factors and help spread the word!

And make sure you know the facts of the disease and take your heart check-up.

Need some more encouragement to get moving during these cold months?  Other than the $300 worth of Glow Mama No Butts About it goodies we are giving away next week?  How about the Baby Boot Camp’s Mother Love Fitness Challenge?  What better way to stay on top of that new exercise promise than meeting a regular group of gals, workout with a nationally certified fitness expert… and have your baby there along for the ride?

February is their cardiovascular endurance… or Cardio Love! (which sounds much better)… so jump on board, find out more details… and see you there.  Yes Glow Mama is one of the sponsors!  Nothing like a bit of exercise to build up a thirst!

Heathery, of Middle Georgia Mommy, tried the Mama-politan this week, and really enjoyed it.

I love the fact that it is a great supplement to a prenatal vitamin. It will be a staple around here for a while!

And the Consumer Queen (boy do I love that title!) says

Glow Mama keeps mom refreshed and hydrated and gives you the confidence of doing something great  for your body.

And Pink (like the color) reminds us that Glow Mama makes a great gift.

Are you looking for a unique gift for the expectant or new mom in your life? Or just someone that is health conscious but still like to stylish and hip?

Glow’s Maternity Wellness Causes

November 25th, 2008 by lucy

In less than a week we’re going to close the polls and finalize our choice for which maternity wellness cause to support for the following year… and it occurred to me yesterday as I was helping hand out Thanksgiving dinner food bags at the Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco (yes each of the 300+ bags included a bottle of Glow Mama)… that we were being biased.  What about the other two fantastic organizations?

The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services is a fantastic joint effort of more than 26 organizational members, from Lamaze to Birthing From Within, who band together to promote a wellness model of maternity care.  Through evidence-based alternatives they focus on mother/baby/family friendly wellness to avoid the high-cost screening, diagnosis and treatment programs.  There are many ways to both give to them (donating, becoming an advocate, etc) and benefit from them (ie downloading their “ten questions to ask before having a baby” pdf).

Family Care International has spent the last 20 years making pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.  They work in countries like Bolivia, Kenya and Niger to ensure the women there have access to quality maternal and newborn health care, as well as helping women and girls prevent and manage unintended pregnancies.   Donating just $60 will buy equipment for two clinics in Africa to screen pregnant women for high blood pressure.

So please cast your vote (in the grey box in our sidebar) and help us decide this Thanksgiving.  Need inspiration?  Below are the poll results so far.   Need more inspriation still?  As our way of saying thanks for helping us give, if you leave a comment on our November Thanks Giving-Away post telling us you voted, we’ll enter you in to win the big pile of goodies.  And if you blab about our thanksgiving efforts to others (blog, twitter, twittermoms, facebook), we’ll enter you again and again.

Alison Sweeney drinks at her baby shower!

November 24th, 2008 by lucy

Alison Sweeney and her guests were treated to some Glow Mama recently at her baby shower hosted by the Hot Moms Club in LA… and the news even made it to the Life & Style magazine!

Want to win the $2000 goody pack she received that included Glow Mama?  You can at Life&Style Weekly… and no, we wouldn’t make you donate yours to charity like she did.
