Five, Six, Seven and Eight…September 26th, 2008 by amy
By now, we’ve all heard the benefits of exercise for keeping fit, maintaining a healthy weight and living longer. And we all know that it takes work and discipline to carve out time every day in our hectic lives, and that exercising is usually one of the first things to fall off the to-do list.
But how does pregnancy affect the guidelines for exercise? Should you stop exercising once you are pregnant, or if you haven’t been exercising, is it a good time to start? For more info, Glow turned to the recommendations of the American Pregnancy Association (APA) which outlines the positive effects that exercising while pregnant has for you and your bump.
The preparation for labor alone is enough motivation for me, but how about the other benefits - a better mood (your husband will thank you), more energy (and what new or expectant mama doesn’t need energy?!), and more sleep (ah, zzz’s - get ‘em while you can!).
There are lots of great resources for expectant and new moms including Stroller Strides, Baby Boot Camp, and local Mommy & Me yoga classes. And don’t forget about the fabulous Chicks-n-chickens, which was featured in our September giveaway!
There are risks associated with intense exercise or new forms of exercise while pregnant, so be sure to check with your health care provider to determine your specific guidelines for a safe & healthy pregnancy.
